What is Social Bookmarking and How Can it Help my Website?

Social bookmarking has been around for a couple of years, but for me, it’s a whole new concept as I learn more and more about internet marketing and how best to get traffic to my site and blog. It is a process that is becoming more and more popular as a means of generating traffic and page rank, so it’s something I want to get started with right away! Most of us who own a PC know that when we come across a website that we like, we can add that site to our list of favorites or bookmark it for our own future use. Social bookmarking takes that organizational process a step further by making public the list of sites you frequent. This article will discuss what social bookmarking really is, its advantages, and how it can help your website.

What is social bookmarking? As mentioned above, social bookmarking is a system of organizing websites that you want to re-visit, but rather than bookmarking them in a folder on your computer, you bookmark them on a special social bookmarking website. If you do a Google search for “social bookmarking websites” you will find a list of the top social bookmarking sites that you can join to add your favorite sites to. The way you go about this is to use keywords that represent your favorite site’s content, or in other words, you “tag” it. You can then make your entries public or private. The ones that you make public can be seen by anyone who visits the social bookmarking sites and looks up the keywords you used to describe your bookmarked sites. The public display will also show who created the bookmark, when, and how popular those keywords are.

There are many advantages of using social bookmarking as opposed to simply bookmarking. By making your list of popular sites public, you have the ability to share information with others who are looking for the same type of information. They will be able to find a list of sites that display exactly what they want just by logging into a social bookmarking site and typing in some relevant keywords. This is a tremendous way of helping others find useful information, or sharing resources with a group of people. For example, a group of network marketers may want information on prospecting, so they would log in, type in “prospecting” and receive a list of bookmarked sites on “prospecting”, and other related topics, just like that! Not only will you find links to sites that you are interested in, but you can find out who has bookmarked your own site and how popular it is. Also, if you want to contact others who are interested in the same topics and sites as you, or know more about it than you, you can easily make a new connection with someone! How handy is that?

Aside from the benefits of resource sharing, social bookmarking can help generate traffic to your site and blog. You can set up your blog to link to your favorite tagged sites, and allow your blog visitors to easily bookmark your site. This will result in more traffic, possibly a better Google Page Rank, and potentially more sales! Some of the social bookmarking sites that you join allow you to add your bookmarks to your blog. In this way, your blog can be updated with tags and links on a daily basis! If you know how important it is to update your blog frequently to get the search engine spiders and traffic over to your site, then you will appreciate this feature! Not only that, but you can use your social bookmarking sites to post links to your website, thereby increasing your traffic and PR with a backlink from authority sites!

I have yet to discover the disadvantages of social bookmarking, but its advantages, as listed above, are enough to get me excited about this relatively new way of marketing my website and blog! I hope you are excited too, and will take action to improve your websites and blogs! You never know, you may even connect with an expert in your specialty area that can help you achieve your goals and dreams!

How Can Social Bookmarking Software Help Your Online Business?

bookmarking software has fulfilled the dreams and aspirations of many webmasters and writers. This software has enabled an emergence of a large number of much needed social bookmark sites that have given an impetus to interaction between online communities, enabling them to share mass information, data, articles and even tidbits of gossip.

Social software has hit the nail on the head by recognizing and fulfilling the requirements of like-minded people. Now such people can share a variety of information such as simple tips, concerned advice or even important data through social networking sites such as Digg and Furl. Thanks to bookmarking software, these networking sites are immensely popular as they allow their users to use tags, categories and other means to get to the relevant content.

bookmarking enables online surfers to share and store information that that they benefit from as well as enjoy. It is the social bookmarking software that automates the task of individually bookmarking each site. The software makes sure that social bookmark networks are streamlined as well so that the users can access the most relevant content.

Social bookmarking software is a good friend to a busy webmaster. Even one good article that is shared and tagged with an anchor text link keyword phrase across many social booking networks will help a webmaster find a place in the top 10 searches in search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN.

Today more and more software is being developed with additional features to keep up-to-date with recent developments. You too will notice that the most popular internet blogs or forums have high traffic on account of a provision to its users that enables them to share content and communicate views, advice, ideas and tips.

Similar is the case with bookmarking software that can be a boon to a webmaster getting him increased target traffic by encouraging web users to tag his content.

Bookmarking software has its own set of disadvantages too. Most of the social bookmarking software is created to spam the social bookmarking sites. The software does this by auto-creating random account login names and passwords. Their primary function is to create multiple accounts that bookmark the same url. This always raises a red flag with the bookmarking sites that ban such accounts. Surely you don’t want yours to be in the soup as well?

Social bookmarking software also has very limited features that are not designed to bookmark any sites. Some are just plugins for WordPress blogs and others are simply RSS feeds. Besides all this, bookmarking software is notorious for having duplicate content problem that results in the search engines ignoring your bookmarking links.

All social bookmarking software have their own unique features, some good and bad points, so you have to choose the one that works the best for yourself.

Social Bookmarking Sites: How They Can Help the Webmaster

Social bookmarking is quickly becoming one of the many popular aspects of what we know as web 2.0.  It is becoming a very effective way for web surfers to find the latest information and news on any subject they want.  Social bookmarking sites use viral marketing and popular opinion and have the ability to discover what is important before any search engine bot can spider the site and rank it among the thousands of sites out there on the internet.  It is becoming a crucial part of any business’ online presence and is a source of traffic for your site that should not be ignored.

Social bookmarking is a powerful tool in promoting a website and may just be the best way to boost the traffic to your site.  Webmasters now have the ability to display a variety of bookmarking buttons on their web pages and the surfer can then easily bookmark the site or specific page.  One little click on the relevant button that is being displayed, the surfer will be taken to their favorite bookmarking account.  Multiple social bookmarking sites are combined on one page into one button to make it easier for the surfer and no work is required by the webmaster.

Optimizing your web pages for Google and all the other major search engines is not enough anymore.  The only way to be successful at online marketing is to include the online community as part of your marketing efforts and to not ignore the effectiveness of web 2.0.  Social bookmarking can help you get your sites out there on 47 of the best social bookmarking sites in under 15 minutes.  The more people that bookmark your site, the more organic traffic you will get, as well as backlinks which will give it authority in Google.  Now keep in mind that social bookmarking alone will not give you a top search engine ranking, but it will definitely not hurt your marketing efforts.

If you are going to try to reach the social bookmarking audience, then make sure you include Digg on your pages because the audience is so large.  Digg is a high power authority and a listing will rank highly on Google and other search engines for certain terms.  Searchles is loved by Google, Yahoo and the other major search engines.  StartAid bookmark pages rank highly in Google and other search engines as well.  Listing your sites in Furl will lead to traffic from organic rankings and its popular page drives traffic.  Best of all, StumbleUpon can send major traffic with its user base of around 3 million and currently brings in more traffic than any other social bookmarking site.  A great place to find a button to add all of these services to your site is www.addthis.com and is free.

Free exposure is always going to be the best alternative for the webmaster, and social bookmarking services like these as well as other web 2.0 sites are great ways to get a lot of free exposure and traffic.  This isn’t only good for building backlinks, but people search on bookmark sites to find information as well.  Do not ignore the major bookmarking sites, or you are ignoring some of your potential subscribers or customers.

If one of your main concerns is getting repeat traffic, then you must make it easy for your visitors to add your web pages or site to their social bookmarking services.  Word-of-mouth advertising is often underestimated and overlooked, but this can drive a lot of traffic to your content and create buzz.  Web 2.0 sites like bookmarking services get millions of hits a day, so it would be wise for you to start utilizing them on your site to increase both real traffic and get long term incoming links.

Beyond Web 2.0 — How rdfa Can Help to Democratise Data on t

Google Tech Talk June 19, 2009 ABSTRACT Beyond Web 2.0 — How rdfa Can Help to Democratise Data on the Web. Presented by Mark Birbeck. Publishing to the web has never been easier, with the proliferation of content management systems, online blogging platforms, microblogging, and more. However, publishing data is either the preserve of organizations prepared to manage their own IT, or requires individuals to sign up for one web 2.0 service after another. rdfa provides a straightforward means by which data can be published as easily as a web-page can, and the implications are enormous. From large organizations to the individual blogger, anyone can now publish data by simply placing extra markup in their pages, putting individuals back in control of their own data. Instead of burying their data in an ever growing array of online services, individuals will now simply publish once, and allow third-party services to consume their information — from profile information to items for sale, from film reviews to favorite recipes, your web-pages become your API. By allowing everyone to have an API, rdfa creates the possibility of a new generation of applications that will operate across our data. Mark Birbeck works on standards and applications at the juncture of rich user interfaces and the semantic web. To help these two worlds communicate, he invented rdfa. He’s an invited expert at the W3C where he is deeply involved with xforms and XHTML 2. Alongside his standards work, he has
